FASHION
"Fashion is something that goes in one year and out the other…" —Unknown
By WINK Staff
“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” —Coco Chanel

Above: Don't fret! You can still experience fashion of this nostalgic variety at your local Renaissance Faire! PA definitely has one every year just about this time. You can don your medieval gear for your local Celtic Classic Festival s also!
What is fashion?

Fashion is a relatively undefinable concept, yet is widely (and wildly) embraced in our society. Fashion is art. It's a religion. It's a job. It's an expression of a person, or a character, or an emotion. Ultimately, fashion is whatever you want it to be.

For a long time, clothing was a depiction of social class. Changes in fashion usually took place during times of economic and social change in society. Hundreds of years passed while clothing stayed the same. As more trades were made between continents, fashion started to blossom. However, clothing still remained relatively the same. That is, until 14th Century Europe.

Men started stuffing the chests of their garments. Pants were shortened and tightened. Women began coloring their hair, which was not often done until this point, and adorning themselves in lavish feathers and frills. The luxury of such exotic clothing was reserved almost exclusively to the upper classes, as they were the only ones with any sort of wealth in society.

Fashion exploded through the upper classes of Europe like wildfire, though the cuts of clothing changed at a much slower pace. Mens fashions were largely based on military suitings, and women typically wore traditional gowns, corsets, and petticoats. Not until the 1920s, when flapper girls shortened their skirts and cut their hair, did women get the chance to fully express themselves through their clothing.
Now “fashion” is a multi-billion dollar industry. And while the upper classes still have the most access to the most exotic and expensive clothing, what we know as “street fashion” has grown larger than ever.

These are the styles the people come up with, the attitudes the individual person projects. This can even dictate waves in mainstream fashion. Fashion varies so much between social class, generation, and location that the industry is constantly evolving and changing before our eyes.

The most appealing aspect of fashion is that it can be whatever you want it to be, as it is an expression of yourself. Whether you dress like a celebrity, an athlete, an artist, or a golf player—you are what fashion is all about. Dance in your new shoes, or make something new, the best part about fashion is when you are happy for being yourself!
