Kim Cattrall: Sexual Intelligence
(TV 2005)
MA. 82 min.
(Watch
on Netflix)
(Check
Out The Book)
I never watched a single episode of “Sex & The City”
so I had no idea how annoying Kim Cattrall could possibly be. If you
can’t stomach her pseudo-sexy over-acting, or have no desire
to explore such social taboos like penises, vulvas, orgasms, masturbation,
fantasies, fetishes, casual intercourse, etcetera, just don’t
watch this.
On the other hand, if you’re preparing a birds/bees speech for
your pre-teen child, this film could be an inspirational jumping-off
point. Interviews with professionals in the field of medicine and
psychology, along with its use of historic landmarks, art and mythology
references move the film along with a surprisingly sterile tone. |

Naked Ambition: An R Rated
Look at an X Rated Industry (2009)
R 81 min. Directed by Michael Grecco (www.nakedambition.com)
(Watch
On Netflix)
The film I judged to be the least entertaining was somehow the most
enjoyable, by far. I wouldn’t go recommending it to everyone,
but to someone who loves glamour, photography, platform shoes, alternative
subculture, or just plain old porn, I’d say, jump in!
Grecco’s main goal was to show a more human aspect of some of
the fantasy characters that make up the American porn industry. By
the end of the film, you find yourself evaluating it’s evolution,
attaching some kind of validity to it (whether or not you yourself
participate), and |
letting go of some fierce judgments,
all while rooting for your personal favorite “New AVN Starlet.”
No doubt there’s some ugliness behind the scenes of a porn set,
but the glimpse you get here is just loaded with eye candy!!! As with
the first two I watched, this film reflected the social values and
norms of its time quite reasonably.
Also, seeing Larry Flynt speak just one sentence brought me to tears
for a second. |

Heavy Petting (1989) R.
74 min.
(Watch
on Netflix)
To watch this film is like to sit around your parents’ living
room while all your aunts and uncles reminisce about their most intimate
and awkward make-out experiences. Turn off the lights, and pair that
with endless clips of the actual black & white, reel to reel projection
sex-ed movies your parents watched in school, and this simile becomes
very literal.
You can watch this detailed look at sex in the nuclear age of America
and then THANK GOD (or whomever) that we now have the collective consciousness
of the internet to teach us about something so diverse and intricate
as human sexuality.
Oh yeah, and David Byrne is in this. |
